Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cortas add preservatives or coloring to its products?
All our products are free from preservatives or coloring agents (except concentrated fruit-based beverage syrups, which contain FDA-approved coloring). One of our priorities, in fact, is to keep the processing of foods as close to the traditional, natural methods used for centuries.

Where do raw materials for Cortas products come from?
All fruits and vegetables come from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, the celebrated “bread basket” of the ancient Romans. The world’s finest sesame seeds are imported from Sudan for use in Cortas halawa and tahina.

Does Cortas use soldered cans?
No. Cortas packages its products in cans that are safely welded, not soldered, and sealed hermetically. Cans are internally lined with food–grade lacquer that prevent any reaction between food and can’s metal. This is in accordance with international standards.

Are canned foods as good for you as fresh and frozen?
Results from a nutrition study conducted in 2000 by the University of Massachusetts (UMass) found that recipes using canned ingredients are similar in nutritional value and sensory perception to those made with fresh and frozen ingredients.

According to the findings, the ingredients chosen, regardless if they are in the fresh, frozen or canned form, are what really determine a recipe's nutrient content. Recipes prepared with canned foods were judged favorably on taste, appearance, aroma and texture when compared to their fresh and frozen counterparts.

Who monitors the quality of Cortas’ products?
In large food manufacturing companies such as Cortas, there has been a trend to move away from government regulatory inspection to monitoring quality systems developed by the company. Increasingly, these quality systems are being audited by third party, certifying bodies to international standards such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9000) series. The benefit for consumers is that, if a quality system is in place, corrective action can be implemented at critical control points more effectively than final product checking either at manufacturing or retail level.
